If you have got skills, you do not need a sponsor to move to the UK. You can apply for the Global Talent Visa and move to the UK on the basis of your skills. Or if you are already in the UK on a Skilled Worker visa, switching to the Global Talent visa might be worth exploring.
What is the Global Talent Visa?
The Global Talent Visa allows professionals with skills in digital technology, academia (including science, medicine, humanities, engineering) or creative sectors (including television and film, fashion and architecture) to migrate to the UK without the need for sponsorship from a UK employer. Applicants will need to be endorsed by a Home Office Designated Competent Body (DCB).
The Global Talent Visa is a streamlined route for skilled and promising professionals to gain fast-tracked entry, work authorisation and settlement. It offers the opportunity to bring your family to live and work in the UK for a maximum of 5 years.
Why does the Global Talent Visa exist?
The UK boasts a vibrant and dynamic economy but faces significant skills gaps in key areas. The Global Talent Visa program was designed to attract the brightest and best talent from around the world to bridge this gap.
According to the Totaljobs Hiring Trends Index, there were 916,000 open roles in Q1 2024. The report also shows that 3 in 5 (59%) employers are facing challenges hiring talent with the right skills.
This translates to exciting opportunities for skilled professionals like you!

- The Royal Academy of Engineering – for engineering professionals
- Tech Nation – for digital technology professionals

While the Global Talent Visa gives you rights to live and work in the UK, landing your dream job in the UK as a foreign professional requires strategic planning and understanding the nuances of the job market. Here are 5 tips to help your search:
- Research the UK job market market and skills gaps for your sector
- Use online resources (job boards) to search and platforms such as LinkedIn groups to connect and collaborate with professionals in the UK
- Make it clear on your resume / CV that you have rights to work without sponsorship. Some employers are still hesitant to sponsor foreign professionals
- Refine your online presence and consider qualifications valued in the UK for your industry
- Tailor your application materials (CV and cover letter) to align with the UK style and prepare for interviews. UK interview style may differ from your home country
Good luck!
